CRO Baby Care
After
nine anxious months, an often intense labor, and fiercely awaiting the
‘cry of life’ it is time for the exhausted parents to meet
their newborn. Filled with pride, marvel, and exhilaration they glance
at that tiny body and as soon as they touch, an instant bond is formed,
a connection that will last a lifetime.
“Is everything alright?” is usually the first question
new parents ask as soon as the umbilical cord has been detached and the
nurses gave the infant its initial checkup. Weight, height, heartbeat
are all in normal range and all ten fingers and toes are attached where
they should be. Then the parents see that oddly shaped head, wrinkled
face, and tiny fists and feet and they know they are in love.
Having a healthy child is the most marvelous feeling in the world,
delivering twins or triplets, doubles that sensation, but unfortunately
not every baby is strong and in excellent physical condition.
Prematurely born, from mothers with addiction or HIV problems, or
parents with genetic disorders, are just some of the reasons why some
children are prone to develop health problems from an early age on,
diseases and conditions they may have to fight their entire life.
Most parents will love their children unconditionally, regardless if they are healthy, or require special care. They will nurture them, and do everything in their power to give their babies the best childhood ever.
When babies cry!
Babies cry for many reasons. It is their way of
communicating that they are hungry, bored, sick, or feel too hot or too
cold. At other times they may cry because they have an uncomfortable
dirty diaper, or simply may want attention and closeness. There is
still another reason; often missed by first-time parents is the fact
that babies sometimes cry because they no longer want to be cuddled.
All they want to do is sleep.
Very young infants are quite sensitive and cry when they are handled
roughly, or when they are startled, like from jerky movement, a loud
noise, or bright light. Within a few months, parents will be able to
recognize and distinguish between wails of hunger, fatigue, discomfort
and pain. In addition, they will learn that keeping a regular routine
will eliminate a lot of disturbances, which will keep their baby more
relaxed and peaceful.
It is important to respond to a fussing baby without delay so that
it will not feel ignored. Mothers reacting quickly and sensitively tend
to have children with more advanced communication skills, including
speaking and social behavior. Some child psychologists also believe
that a receptive response promotes self-confidence and self-respect
later in life.
Infant colic is a condition in which, for extended periods of time,
an otherwise healthy baby cries uncontrollably without any discernible
reason. The condition usually appears within the first two weeks of
life and most often disappears before the baby turns three to four
months old. The crying sessions repeatedly occur during a specific time
frame of the day, often in the early evening.
There are many ways to soothe and console a baby in distress. Applying movement and sound can be quite effective. Rocking or bouncing the little one, or walking and dancing around while holding it can alleviate some angst. Softly singing or humming, a nurturing massage, or trying a new cradling position may help, and if all fails, there is always one last solution, called the pacifier!
Personalized book
I remember the day that I gave my daughter her first personalized book. It was a gift for her first birthday and that special book soon became her favoritepossession. We would sit and read it every night, even after she had moved on to more advanced books. I think she loved it so much simply because it was a personalized book just for her.
