Baby’s First Haircut
Parents are always very proud when their baby is born with a nice head of hair. What they do not realize is that, and because of it, they will be confronted with their child’s first haircut way before those parents who have little ones whose hair grows in later.
Seemingly overnight, parents can find that their baby’s beautiful head of hair turned into one of these untamable shags, resembling that of a hippy or sixties pop star, and as much as they try to fight it, they know it is time for that very first haircut.
Many first-time parents are nervous when it comes to using combs and scissors on their precious offspring. It may feel awkward at first, but like with many jobs in life, cutting hair can be mastered with practice, and if done at home, does have its advantages. For one, you can wait until the baby is in a good mood, something that may be gone by the time you hit the hair salon or barbershop.
Keeping a baby happy and distracted during this momentous occasion is the most crucial part of the job. Use whatever works, even if you have to hand over a new toy, a snack bag of cookies, or put on a favorite movie or cartoon.
When ready, and having the right tools at hand, place the child where it feels most comfortable. This may be on the floor, on someone’s lap, or in a highchair. Keep a spray bottle and comb handy and use hairdresser scissors with rounded tips. This kind will keep you from accidently poking your baby’s sensitive skin. Dampen and comb the hair slightly as you work, and if the baby starts getting restless, stop and finish when the child’s attention is refocused on what was keeping it quiet earlier.
A child’s first haircut may be scary at first, but he or she will get used to it over time. Nevertheless, if you wish to go to a hairdresser or barber, find one who specializes in cutting children’s hair. These professionals know how to work fast so you and your baby are in and out of the chair in record time.
