When babies cry!

Babies cry for many reasons. It is their way of communicating that they are hungry, bored, sick, or feel too hot or too cold. At other times they may cry because they have an uncomfortable dirty diaper, or simply may want attention and closeness. There is still another reason; often missed by first-time parents is the fact that babies sometimes cry because they no longer want to be cuddled.  All they want to do is sleep.

Very young infants are quite sensitive and cry when they are handled roughly, or when they are startled, like from jerky movement, a loud noise, or bright light. Within a few months, parents will be able to recognize and distinguish between wails of hunger, fatigue, discomfort and pain. In addition, they will learn that keeping a regular routine will eliminate a lot of disturbances, which will keep their baby more relaxed and peaceful.

It is important to respond to a fussing baby without delay so that it will not feel ignored. Mothers reacting quickly and sensitively tend to have children with more advanced communication skills, including speaking and social behavior. Some child psychologists also believe that a receptive response promotes self-confidence and self-respect later in life.

Infant colic is a condition in which, for extended periods of time, an otherwise healthy baby cries uncontrollably without any discernible reason. Bad Breath treatment could help, but the condition usually appears within the first two weeks of life and most often disappears before the baby turns three to four months old. The crying sessions repeatedly occur during a specific time frame of the day, often in the early evening.

There are many ways to soothe and console a baby in distress. Applying movement and sound can be quite effective. Rocking or bouncing the little one, or walking and dancing around while holding it can alleviate some angst. Softly singing or humming, a nurturing massage, or trying a new cradling position may help, and if all fails, there is always one last solution, called the pacifier! Read more
